Abstract

A reinforced plastic material which may be moulded or laminated comprises as reinforcement chenille threads each consisting of a twisted metal core in which is seized a textile yarn. The yarns may form the warp or weft or both of a woven fabric, the non-chenille warp or weft, when present, being of plain metal wire. The metal may be steel, and the textile threads may be wool, cotton, asbestos, fibre-glass, or polyvinyl chloride threads. The plastic material may be polyvinyl chloride, a polyester, a phenol-, urea-, or melamine-formaldehyde resin, and the product may also comprise a porous layer of plastic material such as foamed polyvinyl chloride, phenol-formaldehyde, allyl, or polyester resin, expanded rubber, protein, or calcium alginate on a surface, or between two layers. A conveyer belt may be made by impregnating and subsequently coating once or oftener with polyvinyl chloride paste a fabric with warp and weft of chenille yarn comprising cotton yarn seized in stranded steel wire, the polyvinyl chloride paste being heated after each application, and the layers being smoothly rolled out in the final stages and curved, e.g. by a high frequency induction heater. A moulded article is made by pressing into a female mould a fabric woven from chenille yarns comprising stranded ductile steel wire and cotton yarn, pouring in a polyester resin composition containing benzoyl peroxide, re-pressing to force the resin evenly over the whole area of the mould, and heating to cure the resin. The resin may be cured by high frequency electric heating and may contain a sintered metal powder as metal oxide as filler.
