Abstract

<PICT:0711441/IV (b)/1> Hydrocarbon conversions using a liquid aluminium halide complex catalyst are carried out by contacting the liquid feed, entering reactor 10 through pipe 25, with liquid catalyst introduced through pipe 18, and recycling catalyst from the bottom to the top of the reactor via pipe 17; a dispersion of catalyst in the feed liquid is formed in the central part of the reactor and is impelled by means of stirrer 23 against cooling coils 33. A layer of catalyst forms below baffle plate 11, and part is removed at 14, being replaced by aluminium halide which is introduced at 36 or mixed with the recycled catalyst; the product is removed at 22. The polymerization of normally gaseous olefines (e.g. propylene or butylenes) is carried out at 20-80 DEG F. at a pressure of e.g. 100 lbs. per sq. in. gauge with aluminium chloride-hydrocarbon complex catalyst circulating at a rate of at least 0.25 times the rate of reactant feed, and with replacement of aluminium chloride in an amount of 0.1-2 parts per 100 parts of olefine in the feed. Liquid propane is passed through the coils as a cooling agent. A product containing 90 per cent heavy polymer may be obtained. The invention is also applicable to alkylation, isomerization, and reforming of hydrocarbons U.S.A. Specification 2,407,873 is referred to.ALSO:<PICT:0711441/III/1> Hydrocarbon conversions using a liquid aluminium halide complex catalyst are carried out by contacting the liquid feed, entering reactor 10 through pipe 25, with liquid catalyst introduced through pipe 18 and recycling catalyst from the bottom to the top of the reactor via pipe 17; a dispersion of catalyst in the feed liquid is formed in the central part of the reactor and is impelled by means of stirrer 23 against cooling coils 33. A cooling agent, e.g. liquid propane is passed through the coils. Polymerization of olefines is described (see Group IV (b)) and the invention is also applicable to alkylation, isomerization and reforming of hydrocarbons. U.S.A.
