Abstract
<PICT:0711432/III/1> In the extraction of fatty oil from materials of high water content, particularly fish, by means of solvents forming azeotropic mixtures with water, after the material has been freed of moisture by heating with such a solvent, it is sprayed with a solvent in countercurrent to recover the remaining oil and then dried, the materials moving continuously and in the same direction, passing through the stages of extraction of moisture, of spraying and of drying. The apparatus preferably uses a series of three conveyers in one unit or in separate units for each of the steps of removing moisture, spraying, and drying. The solvents specified comprise perchlorethylene and trichlorethylene. In a suitable apparatus for the process, a screw conveyer 1 is provided in a chamber having a feed hopper 2 heaters 3 and an outlet 5 leading to an elevator 6. The conveyer also acts as a disintegrator for the material. The solvent flows in countercurrent thereto dissolving the oil from the material and at the same time forms an azeotropic mixture with the water of the material which is evaporated, at a temperature lower than the boiling point of the solvent, by the controlled heaters 3, the vapours being led off through flues 4. The upward travelling shaft of the elevator 6 is divided into a spraying section 7 and a draining section 8, both provided with heaters 9. The remaining oil is recovered from the material carried therethrough on the platforms of the conveyer. The material is then emptied at 10 on to a discharge conveyer 11 and led through a bucket wheel hopper 12 to a drying apparatus consisting of conveyers 14 with heaters 13. The dried material leaves at the outlet 16 and the vapours through the pipe system 15. In a modified apparatus, the drying unit is built into the elevator return shaft 6, controllable heaters being provided on its walls. The solvent may be admitted or extracted at one or more points of the apparatus. Three parts of perchlorethylene to one of raw material by volume are required to form the azeotropic mixture; five parts of solvent to one of raw material for the whole process.
