Abstract

Copolymers of styrene and drying or semi-drying oils are obtained by introducing 1 to 400 per cent. of styrene vapour into the oil heated to 300 - 500 DEG F., preferably 450 DEG F. Oils mentioned are linseed, camphor, stillingia, perilla, isano, tobacco-seed, soyabean, niger-seed, dehydrated castor, tung and oiticica oils and resins such as run copal, alkyd, phenolic and colophony and also cyclopentadiene may be included. The process may be continuous or batch-wise and the copolymer may be after-treated by heating at 450-600 DEG F. to yield a stand oil.
