710,751. Ornamental coatings. VOGT, A. May 3, 1950 [May 6, 1949], No. 10928/50. Class 93 An ornamental coating comprises at least one metal layer which is light-absorbing, light-reflecting, partly permeable to light, and unclouded, and at least one layer thereon of a metal compound, which layer is absorption-free, has a ,refractive index higher than that of air and is unclouded, the thickness of said layers being of the order of the wave-length of light in the visible spectrum so that interference effects occur by reflection of the incident light at the boundary surfaces of the layers. Metal compounds may be oxides, fluorides or nitrides. In examples (1) a thin layer of chromium followed by a layer of titanium oxide are evaporated on to a glass bottle, the total thickness of the layers being 1,000 Angstrom units; (2) a metal box has a layer of gold on which has been evaporated a layer of aluminium oxide, forming a coating 1,000 Angstrom units thick; and (3) a spectacle-frame having a thin layer of aluminium oxidized to aluminium oxide has a layer of silicon monoxide applied by evaporation.
