Classes 19 and 61 A device for cleaning toilet bowls and the like comprises a disposable swab in the form of an open-top bag which slips over and is secured to the head of a holder capable of being manipulated to rupture and disengage the swab after use. Disposable swab. The swab, Figs. 1, 3, 5, is constructed from a composite pad formed from a mat 11 and an outer wrap sheet 12. The mat 11 comprises a filler 13 of soft absorbent material readily disintegrable when wet, enclosed in a sheet 14 of thin paper which is strengthened by impregnation with a resin. The outer sheet 12 is impregnated with a detergent and a blueing agent and its outer surface coated with a foaming agent; a disinfectant and a perfume may also be added. The margins 16, 18 of the sheet 12 are coated with adhesive, e.g. a thermosetting plastic. The swab is assembled by folding over the projecting flaps 17, so as to retain the mat 11 and securing the margins 18 to the body of the sheet 12 (Fig. 3). The pad so formed is folded on its centre line and the margins 16 sealed together, to form an open-top bag having the wrap sheet 12 on the outside: the inwardly turned flap portions 17 provide means to latch the swab on to the holder. Holder. The holder, Figs. 6, 7, 9 may be of moulded plastic material; it comprises a handle portion 32 and a head 31 bearing flukes 34 which engage the flaps 17 of the swab when this is in position on the head. To provide for rupturing and disposal of the swab after use, the holder is split longitudinally, taking the form of opposed parts 36, 37 which are hinged together at the toe 38 of the head 31. The hinge comprises a knuckle 50, Fig. 9, on the head part 30 formed with sockets which engage pins 51 located in a slot 46 in the upper head part 37. The parts 36, 37 are held together in closed position by a pin 53, formed on the end of the part 37, and latching in an aperture in flange 55 on the part 36. Sideways displacement of the parts, which are hollow in section, is prevented by means of tongue-and-groove members 65, 66 formed within them, Fig 10 (not shown). The Specification also refers in brief detail to alternative constructions of holder suitable for rupturing the swab after use.
