Classes 17(1) and 17(2) Relates to methods of and apparatus for subjecting a sole O to a warm moist atmosphere and simultaneously activating cement on the sole' and on the bottom of a shoes prepartory to the cement attachment of the sole, by dry heat above the temperature of boiling water wherein a cementcoated sole is placed on a support having the contour of the shoe bottom and a shoe bottom is placed on or near a heater. The heating unit, which is suported on a frame 10, may be a hollow member 20 with perforations in its opposite faces 22, 24, which face the sole and the shoe bottom, and hot air is supplied to the interior of the heating unit, and thus to the cement-coated margins of the shoe upper and sole, by a blower 30 (not shown) and an electric motor which forces air over an electric heater element. Alternatively, the heater element may comprise a receptacle containing heated oil. The sole support 42 comprises a perforated sheet metal screen 52 parallel to the faces 22, 24 over which is laid a foraminous material such as the felt pad 54 and the support 42 is telescopically supported in the upper end of a moisture-generating tank 48 under control of a toggle operated by a foot pedal by which the sole support 42 may be raised and lowered. A thermostatically-controlled heating unit 80 heats the water in the tank 48 and warm moist air is supplied to the sole O by forcing air through a perforated pipe 90 by a compressor 92 (not shown) driven by a motor.
