Abstract
710,013. Wheel tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. Oct. 28, 1952 [Nov. 7, 1951; April 4, 1952], Nos. 26030/51 and 8607/52. Class 144(2) A reinforcement for use in building tyres comprises a pair of bead rings 2 integrally interconnected by a web 3 and is made from a thermoplastic polymeric material such as nylon. The web 3 may take the form of parallel filaments as shown or may be film-like with a thickened centre portion for additional reinforcement of the tread region of the tyre, and perforated along its end portions to provide for bonding with the rubber of the tyre and for increased flexibility of the side walls of the tyre. Fig. 2 shows two filamentary-type reinforcements having complementary D-section beads and oppositely biased filaments 3. The reinforcements may be moulded to band shape and then stretched axially and/or radially, cold or under heat to increase the tenacity of the webs, the beads 2 being simultaneously relatively rotated in the case of a filamentary web to maintain or form the desired bias angle of the filaments. In an alternative arrangement the reinforcement may be moulded to toroidal shape and expanded under heat by internal pressure, the toroidal shape being maintained. In building a tyre, two or more reinforcements may be used, embedded in or interspaced by strips of rubber, the reinforcements being treated with a bonding agent of the polyisocyanate class.
