Abstract

The invention comprises the isomeric forms of 1,3-dichloro-2,3,3-trifluoropropene and fumigant compositions comprising such isomers as the active ingredients (see Group VI). The isomers are produced by a process which comprises contacting zinc with 1,1,2,3-tetrachloro-2,3,3-trifluoropropane in the presence of an alcohol as a solvent for the zinc chloride formed. Alkyl alcohols are effective solvents and those having not more than four carbon atoms are preferred. In an example 1,1,2,3-tetrachloro-2,3,3-trifluoropropane is dropped into a mixture of granular zinc and ethyl alcohol under reflux and the reaction is completed by further refluxing. The two isomers are separated by fractional distillation of the dried crude product and tested as fumigants.ALSO:A fumigant composition comprises as the active ingredient 1, 3-dichloro-2, 3, 3-trifluoropropene (see Group IV(b)) together with a diluent. The effectiveness of both isomers is tested against black carpet beetle larvae and confused flour beetle adults in a fumigation vault.
