Abstract

709,718. Disc brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. Nov. 27, 1951 [Jan. 2, 1951; April 14, 1951], Nos. 115/51 and 8730/51. Class 103(1) [Also in Group XXII] To minimize distortion on heating, brake discs are constructed in such a way that at all positions around the circumference of the member the grain of the metal lies at a substantially constant angle to the corresponding radially extending plane. In a brake disc, the grain may be circumferential as shown at 1 in Fig. 1, at any angle to the corresponding radii as at 2, or radial as at 3, or it may be coaxial with the disc as in figure 2. The grain may also be inclined to the axis of the disc. Discs according to the invention, are constructed by cutting strips 8, 10 or 11 out of a sheet or strip of metal 9, as in Fig. 5, rolled from a billet so that the grain all runs longitudinally. The strips are cut in such a way as to produce the required grain direction and then circled, as in Fig. 6, the ends welded together and the disc machined.
