Abstract

A coating composition, suitable for applying to flexible organic sheet material to form heat-sealing wrapping material, comprises a cellulose derivative as film-forming substance, a plasticizer therefor, a heat-sealing or blending resin, and a polyorganosiloxane resin comprising molecular chains formed by recurring groups of the formula <FORM:0709575/IV (a)/1> wherein R is an alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl, alkaryl or alkoxy group. Moisture-proof coatings on transparent non-fibrous sheet wrapping materials may be obtained and these are age-resistant, heat-sealable, and do not adhere to hot surfaces such as are employed in sealing devices in automatic packaging machines. Sheet materials which may be coated include films of regenerated cellulose, cellulose esters and cellulose ethers, and fibrous sheet materials such as paper. When a moisture-proof coating is desired it is preferred to include a wax in the composition. The polyorgano-siloxane may be dimethyl, dipropyl, dihexyl, diphenyl, phenyl methyl, dinaphthyl, di-amyl-phenyl, di-phenyl-propyl, di-tertiary-butoxy, di-phenylmethoxy, iso-butyl methyl or ethyl phenylmethoxy polysiloxane. A copolymer such as dimethyl diphenyl polysiloxane may be used. Cellulose acetate or nitrate or ethyl cellulose may be used as film-former. In an example a mixture of cellulose nitrates of different viscosities is used. As heat-sealing plasticizer there may be used dibutyl sebacate, dibutyl phthalate, the propionic ester of b -hydroxy-ethyl phthalimide, or ethyl o-benzoyl benzoate. The heat-sealing or blending resin may be an alkyd resin, polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride-acetate copolymer, a modified rosin resin such as glycerine-modified rosin, a glycerine ester of hydrogenated rosin, copal resin or ester gum. Rape seed oil and abietic acid are also specified as blending agents. Paraffin wax may be incorporated with the composition to improve the moisture proofing properties of the coating. The polyorganosiloxane resin is preferably present only in a small proportion, e.g. 0.1-2 per cent. by weight of the total solids in the composition. Volatile solvents and diluents are incorporated in the composition to produce a solution of the required concentration. For sealing the sheet wrapping material there may be used platens which have a coating of a heat-hardenable polyorganosiloxane resin of the same kind as that which is present in the coating on the wrapping material, or a mixture of such resin with metal powder, or the platens may be moulded from a mixture of a polyorganosiloxane resin and metal powder.
