Abstract

709,398. Hose couplings. BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. June 16, 1952 [June 21, 1951; Nov. 29, 1951], Nos. 14806/51 and 28063/51. Class 99(1). In a coupling for a flexible hose comprising inner and outer layers 1, 2 of resilient material, e.g. natural or synthetic rubber, and an embedded tubular layer 3 of flexible reinforcing material, e.g. of fabric or braided high-tensile steel wires which may be fabric covered, the bared reinforcing material is passed through a ring 13 and folded back to extend rearwardly of the ring which is surrounded by a sleeve 7 of a member 6 having an end wall 8 provided with an annular groove 10 integral with a lip 11; alternatively, the lip is formed as a separate ring. The sleeve 7 which may have a swaging band 12, integral with the sleeve or formed as a separate ring, is contracted inwardly to exert an axial thrust on the ring 13 and cause the reinforcing material to be taughtened and gripped between the complementary surfaces of the groove and the ring without inward contraction of the ring. An insert 16 which may be a helical spring, a split or a slotted tube is introduced into the bore of the hose. Preferably the groove and the ring are respectively semi-circular and circular in cross-section. The ring may be of mild steel which becomes indented by the reinforcing material to provide an interlock between the material and the ring; alternatively, the ring is case-hardened so that interlocking is produced between the material and the surface of the groove, or the groove may be lined. A brass ring may be used where the reinforcing material is of fabric. The member 6 may have an extension 9 which is provided with an internal seating surface 14 and is forced over a stepped projecting sealing portion 5 of the inner layer 1 of the hose, the spring insert 16 holding the portion 5 against the surface 14. The pressure of the fluid carried by the hose acts between the convolutions of the insert to cause a firmer sealing contact between the portion 5 and the seating 14. A sheath of rubber or metal and of a fire or high temperature resisting material may be fitted over the member 6 to seal off the outer wall of the hose and prevent projection of the bare reinforcing material, Fig. 7 (not shown). In modifications, (a) the. end of the sleeve 7 is turned inwardly to impart the axial thrust to the ring 13, Fig. 2, (not shown), (b) the ring has a rearward extension between which and the sleeve the reinforcing material is gripped, and which is contracted to press the reinforcing material under it against the inner layer of the hose, Fig. 3, (not shown), (c) the nipple for connecting the coupling to a further member is formed as a separate part and held in position by swaging in an end portion of the member 6 around a collar of the nipple, Fig. 4, (not shown), (d) the ring has a square internal corner one face of which fits against the end face of the outer layer 2 of the hose, and a portion of the extension 9 is contracted to grip the portion 5 of the hose onto a rigid tubular insert, Fig. 5, (not shown), (f) the inner wall of the extension 9 is ribbed or serrated so that the material of the layer 1 of the hose is displaced to form a seal, the crests of the ribs being sharp, flat or curved, Fig. 6, (not shown), (g) that portion of the extension 9 between a sealing part 14 of the layer 1 and the end wall 8 is provided on its inner surface with grooves 20 and is contracted to grip the layer 1 onto a rigid insert 16 provided with a circumferential series of holes 19 allowing fluid pressure to force the part 14 against a sealing surface 15, Fig. 8, and (h) the nipple is attached to the extension 9 by a screw-thread, Fig. 9 (not shown). Specifications 540,490 and 692,787 are referred to.
