Classes 29 and 64(3) For cooling receptacles such as milk cans by distributing water to run down their outer surfaces, cooling liquid is refrigerated in a unit 10 and passes to the distributing headers 54 through pipes 59, the liquid being collected in pans 38 separate from the unit 10 and passing back to the unit 10 through drains 43, pipe 45, a sump 36 and a pump driven by motor 72. The unit 10 rests on a base 16 containing the sump 36 and comprises outer and inner walls 12, 11, spaced by insulation 13, the wall 11 defining a tank 30 for the cooling liquid. A removable lid 15 supports the refrigerant compressor 20 and condenser 21 over which air is drawn through a cowl 24 by a fan 22. Lid 15 also carries the liquid pump motor 72, this pump discharging into a trough 77 carried on the underside of the lid. The lid also carries on its underside two evaporator coils 28, 29 supported respectively on a tubular baffle 31 and angle irons 32, both carried by the lid 15. Liquid being cooled passes from trough 77 down inside the baffle 31 and then can leave the tank through pipe 62 connected to pipe 59. The header 54 extends round the neck of the receptacle 56, is apertured at 55 and connected to the pipe 59 by flexible conduit 57. It is attached by brackets 53, 53a to a lid 50 fitting on the top of a shroud 51 for the receptacle, the end of the header 54 being accommodated in a slot 61 in the shroud. The lid 50 is apertured at 60 to allow the supply of milk to a receptacle located on the pan 38. When not in use, the lids 50 and headers 54 are hung on hooks 83 above the liquid level in the tank 30 so that the supply of liquid, which is gravity fed from the tank, stops. Pipes 45, 59 can be readily extended by means of flexible connections 48, 68 and further pipe sections to allow expansion of the system by the provision of more pans 38 and headers 54. The ultimate ends of pipes 45, 59 are provided with plugs 49, 70.
