Abstract

Mono (tertiary carbinol urethane) substituted organic isocyanates obtained by the reaction of approximately equal molecular proportions of a tertiary alcohol and a polyisocyanate, the hydroxyl group of the carbinol being the only group in either component containing a reactive hydrogen atom, are used as cross-linking agents for diisocyanate-modified polyesters and polyesteramides. Specified adducts are those resulting from the reaction of tertiary butyl alcohol, tertiary amyl alcohol or dimethyl ethinyl carbinol with 4 : 41-diphenyl diisocyanate, 1-methyl-2 : 4-diphenylene diisocyanate, 1 : 5-naphthalene diisocyanate or hexamethylene diisocyanate. Many other carbinols and polyisocyanates are listed.ALSO:The invention comprises the mono- (tertiary carbinol urethane) substituted organic isocyanates prepared by reacting approximately equi-molecular proportions of a polyisocyanate and a tertiary alcohol, the hydroxyl group of the tertiary alcohol being the only group in either of the reactants which contains a reactive hydrogen atom. Specified polyisocyanates include 4 : 41-diphenyl diisocyanate, 1 - methyl - 2 : 4 - phenylene-diisocyanate, 1 : 5-naphthalene diisocyanate and hexamethylene diisocyanate. Specified alcohols include tertiary butyl and tertiary amyl alcohol and dimethyl ethinyl carbinol. In an example the mono adduct of 4 : 41-diphenyl isocyanate and tertiary amyl alcohol is prepared. Many other tertiary alcohols and polyisocyanates which may be used as reactants are specified.
