Abstract

708,670. Valves. WILD & CO., Ltd., A. G. Dec. 1, 1952 [Nov. 30, 1951], No. 28106/51. Class 135 A flushing device of the kind comprising an inlet 8, Fig. 2, situated above a seat for the discharge valve 5 and an outlet 9 situated below it, a sleeve 18 extending downwards from the valve serving to guide the latter throughout its rising and falling movements, a hollow piston carried by the valve and having sufficient clearance from the wall of the casing to allow inlet fluid to leak into a balancing chamber above the piston, and the peripherally-projecting undersurface of the piston being acted upon by inlet pressure to lift and open the valve when the pressure in the balancing chamber is relieved by actuation of a vent valve 17, is characterized in that the vent valve is a sliding member and is made dead beat in action by peripheral friction means, e.g. a fibre ring 27 or a metal spring. The vent passage 11, 13 ... 15, leading from the balancing chamber is normally closed by a disc valve 17 pressed upwards on to its seat by the pressure of the liquid in the chamber. Valve 17 is pushed off of its seat by means of a spring- returned knob 36 and tappet 34. Rotation of the sleeve and piston is prevented by a set-screw 21 riding in a slot or groove in the sleeve. The main discharge takes place into the interior of the sleeve through apertures 19. Towards the end of its upward movement, piston 5 contacts an abutment 28 depending from valve 17 and forces the latter on to its seat to enable pressure to be built up again in the balancing chamber to close valve 4. When valve 17 is seated, the valve and abutment 28 constitute a dead stop limiting upward movement of the piston. The discharge through passages 13 ... 15 may be controlled by an adjustable throttle. Inlet pressure is maintained constant by a spring-pressed disc valve 42, Fig. 4, the loading spring 41 of which may be of bi-metallic construction to correct for changes in viscosity of the liquid. Specification 621,103 is referred to.
