Abstract
An alumina-based catalyst is prepared by forming an aluminium alcoholate of a water-soluble alcohol, hydrolyzing the alcoholate with an aqueous impregnating solution containing a catalytic component to form an impregnated hydrous alumina, and drying and activating the product. The alcoholate is formed by reacting aluminium metal with anhydrous ethyl, propyl, or isopropyl alcohol in the presence of iodine or mercuric chloride as catalyst, and is then hydrolyzed by mixing with the impregnating solution in a mixing nozzle or centrifugal pump, the alcohol being recovered by distillation. Impregnating solutions mentioned are silica hydrosol, and aqueous solutions of ammonium molybdate, ammonium dichromate, ammonium metavanadate, potassium dichromate, potassium nitrate, cerium nitrate, calcium nitrate, chromic acid, boric acid, tungstic acid, ammonium tungstate, and phosphoric acid. Hydrous alumina-silica formed by hydrolysis with silica hydrosol may be mixed with one of the other impregnating solutions before drying and activating. Drying is carried out at 250 DEG -400 DEG F. and activation at 800 DEG -1450 DEG F. The slurry formed by hydrolysis may be emulsified with oil or n-butanol or passed through baths of these substances to form spherical gel particles; the slurry may also be dried by spraying into hot air or flue gas, or into an atmosphere containing ammonia, methylamine, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, or boron trifluoride. Examples describe the preparation of catalysts consisting of alumina - boria, alumina - silica - molybdena, alumina - silica, alumina - vanadia, alumina-tungstia, alumina-phosphoric acid-chromia, and alumina-molybdena; reference is also made to alumina-magnesia and alumina-silica-magnesia catalysts. The catalysts may be used in hydro-forming, aromatization or cracking of hydrocarbons or in processes involving dehydration, dehydrogenation, hydrogenation, esterification, isomerization, condensation, polymerization, or amination.
