Abstract
<PICT:0708118/IV(c)/1> In a method of treating a liquid or solid substance with a liquid, an apparatus is provided wherein the liquid is caused to flow in a closed circuit in which it moves downwardly in a central column from which it is centrifuged and then constrained to ascend in a more or less annular stream whereupon it is constrained to flow inwardly and downwardly in a second more or less annular stream and then to flow inwardly and downwardly to rejoin said central column from which it is recentrifuged. A cylindrical tank 1, a concentric partition 3 and a central passage element 6, define outer and inner flow chambers 4, 7, the element 6 having openings 8 through which the chamber 7 communicates with the central passage. A centrifugal impellor 16 is mounted concentrically below a lower annular partition 5 which extends between the partition 3 and the element 6, and draws directly from the lower end of the element 6. The impellor 16 communicates peripherally with the chamber 4 through an annular zone having stationary vanes 21. In operation liquid, e.g. formalin, is caused to move outwardly from the impellor and to ascend through the chamber 4 and pass over the partition 3 to flow downwardly in the chamber 7 as a more or less annular stream and pass through openings 8 into the element 6 where it again flows downwardly into the impellor and is recirculated. A substance to be mixed with the liquid, e.g. urea, is introduced into the circuit by way of a shoot 23 opening into the central passage element 6. A coil 24 in the chamber 4 is adapted to carry heating or cooling fluid. The coil 24 is supported by baffles 27 which restrain the liquid in the chamber 4 from rotational movement. In the preparation of urea formaldehyde condensation products the impellor may be rotated at about 300 r.p.m. The apparatus may be used for the dissolving of caustic soda in butanol to produce an alkaline reagent. A sieve or filter may be provided immediately surrounding the impellor, attached to or separate from the impellor, to hold back fragments of soluble matter so that they are dissolved by the action of liquid moving at relatively high speed. A cage or basket of annular form having a perforated top and bottom for the passage of washing or other liquid, may be located in one of the flow chambers 4 or 7 for the liquid treatment of manufactured goods, e.g. socks. Preferably the liquid is caused to flow in a turbulent manner during its ascent in the chamber 4 and such turbulent flow may be achieved by adjusting the rate of centrifuging of the liquid.
