Abstract

A foam inhibitor comprises a liquid organo-silicon oxide condensation product and a silane derivative having the general formula <FORM:0707906/III/1> where X is R or OR, and R similar or dissimilar organic radicals such as alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl and heterocyclic groups. Suitable organo-silicon oxide condensation products are the silicones, e.g. dimethyl, methyl phenyl, ethyl butyl, methyl cyclohexyl, dicyclohexyl, diphenyl, hydroxyphenyl methyl, phenyl propyl, phenyl isopropyl, tolyl butyl, and tolyl amyl silicones, and polymers of methyl and ethyl orthosilicates; when the condensation product contains an aromatic hydrocarbon group, substituent radicals, such as halogen, NO2, NH2, SO3H, SH, phosphite or phosphate, may be present. Examples of silane derivatives are silicon tetramethyl, silicon tetraethyl, silicon tetraphenyl, silicon tetrabenzyl, silicon tetrapropyl, tripropylallylsilane, trimethylsilane, triphenylsilane, triethylsilane, tri-i-butylsilane, tri-i-amylsilane, trimethylchlorosilane, tribenzylchlorosilane, triethylbromosilane, triphenylbromosilane, triethylfluorosilane, tribenzylfluorosilane, benzylethylpropylchlorosilane, dimethyl-and diphenyldibromosilane, methyltrichlorosilane, amyltriethoxysilane monomethylo - triethoxysilane, diisopropyldiethoxysilane di-n-butyl-diethoxysilane, triamylethoxysilane, tri-2-ethylhexyl - ethoxysilane, and monolauryl - triethoxysilane. The two ingredients of the foam inhibitor may be mixed with a high-boiling naphtha such as kerosene, and then added to the liquid liable to foam; a finely-divided siliceous material, e.g. silica, may also be included. The inhibitor may be added to special-purpose lubricating oils, e.g. industrial gear lubricants, refrigerator oils, and rock-drill lubricants, to hydraulic transmission oils (see Group XXIX), antifreeze liquids (see Group XIII), gasoline, kerosine, cleaning fluids, turbine oils, latex, resins, paints, perfumes, synthetic oils, vegetable oils and fats, animal oils and fats, and cutting oils containing emulsifying agents and diluted with water. A lubricating oil for Diesel engines also includes basic barium sulphonate, barium dithiophosphate, and a sulphurized terpene product. The foam inhibitor may also be used in processes involving distillation, filtration, solvent extraction &c. Specification 626,515 and U.S.A.
