Abstract

Apparatus for applying a continuous layer of cementitious material to a vertical surface of a core, such as a pipe, comprises a hopper having opposite walls arranged one within another with lower edges displaced vertically with respect to each other constituting the marginal edges of a discharge opening concentric to the core, means for vibrating at least one of the walls, and means for raising the hopper alongside the surface of the core. A core 12 is encircled by an annular coating hopper 10 and an annular supply hopper 11. The hoppers 10 and 11 are supported from cables 29, 30, 31 and 32 passing over pulleys 28 to four winches 13, 14, 15, and 16 mounted on a platform 17 supported on the upper end of the core. The winches are driven by a motor 20 to progressively elevate the hoppers as the coating is extended upwards. The supply hopper 11 has concentric walls 34 and 35 with portions converging to provide a discharge opening 36, extending concentrically about the core, and a valve 37 in the form of a ring which controls the feed of material 38 to the coating hopper 10. The coating hopper 10 is formed by concentric walls 48 and 49, and has a discharge opening formed by the lower edges 52 and 53 of the walls 48 and 49. A plurality of vibrators 60 and 64 are attached to the edges 52 and 53 to assist the movement of the relatively dry and stiff cementitious material through the coating hopper, and the vibrations of the lower part of wall 49 compacts the material against the surface of the core.
