Abstract

Amines are produced by the catalytic reduction of nitro compounds free from aldehyde groups unsubstituted amino groups and halogen atoms, with partially hydrogenated aromatic compounds in presence of metals of the 8th Periodic Group as hydrogenation catalyst. According to examples, nitrobenzene, o, m, and p-nitrotoluene, o-nitrophenol, picric acid, 2-nitroresorcinol o-m-nitroacetophenone, 1-nitronaphthalene o-p-nitrobenzoic acid, p-nitroanisole, o and m nitroacetanilide pnitrotert.-butylbenzene, o- and m, nitro-benzonitrile, 1-nitro-propane m-nitro-N-dimethylaniline, and 1-nitroanthraquinone are reduced to the corresponding mono amino compounds; and m-dinitrobenzene, 2:4 dinitrophenol 3:5 dinitrobenzoic acid, 2:4 dinitrotoluene 1:8 dinitronaphthalene are reduced to mono- or di-amino-compounds according to the conditions, in presence of cyclohexene, methylcyclohexenes, and 3:6 dihydro-phthalic acid and tetrahydronaphthalene as the partially hydrogenated aromatic compound and solvent, and tetrahydro furan diethyl ether, ethanol, and anisole as solvents, with catalysts of Pd black, palladized charcoal, and platinized charcoal. Other partially hydrogenated aromatic compounds specified are 1:3 and 1:4 cyclohexadiene, and other solvents include dioxan, and methanol. The reduction of a dinitro-anthraquinone also is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
