Abstract

705,677. Automatic temperature control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 20, 1951 [Feb. 28, 1950], No. 4116/51. Class 38 (4) In a system involving two stages of magnetic amplification in which the output of the first stage is applied through a rectifier to the second stage, fluctuation of the A.C. supply voltage associated with the output circuits of the stages is arranged to have an opposite effect on each stage, and rectifiers associated with the input control winding and an opposing bias winding are matched to render the final output independent of A.C. voltage fluctuations. To maintain the temperature of a room above a predetermined value a bimetal strip 12, located in the room, moves away from a stop 16 upon fall in temperature below the predetermined value, unbalancing reactances 14, 15 by movement of a magnetic core 13, and thereby energizing, through a rectifier 23, a D.C. input winding 21 of a magnetic amplifier 18 by unbalancing a network associated with an A.C. supply 7, 8. Winding 21 opposes a D.C. bias winding 22 energized through a rectifier 33 from A.C. supply 7, 8. The reactance of A.C. windings 19, 20 on magnetic amplifier 18 is thus increased to decrease, through a rectifier 39, the energization from A.C. source 7, 8 to a D.C. input winding 37 of a second magnetic amplifier 34. Winding 37 opposes a D.C. bias winding 38 energized through a rectifier 9 from A.C. source 7, 8. The reactance of A.C. windings 35, 36 on magnetic amplifier 34 is thus decreased to increase, through a rectifier 45, the D.C. output to terminals 4 to which is connected apparatus (not shown) which thereupon opens the fuel valve of a gas furnace heating the room. In addition to the degree of inherent compensation for voltage variations of A.C. source 7, 8 provided by having two magnetic amplifiers whose outputs respectively decrease and increase, improved compensation is obtained by arranging that rectifiers 23 and 33 have identical characteristics and carry approximately the same currents.
