Class 78 (1) Apparatus for moving loose materials comprises a framework, a hopper for storing materials carried by the framework and having a controllable outlet, and a beam mounted on the framework so that it can swing only about a horizontal axis relative to the framework, the beam supporting an endless chain or belt carrying buckets or scoops for picking up material from a stockpile adjacent one end of the beam and for conveying the material to the other end of the beam and discharging it into the hopper. As shown, an endless chain 12 carrying scoops 16 extends around sprockets 11 mounted at the ends of a beam 1 pivotally mounted at 2 on a frame 3, and feeds material from ground level to a pair of hoppers 26, 27 mounted on the frame. The beam may be adjusted on its pivot 2 by a hydraulic ram 10 whilst the frame may be swung about a vertical axis by hydraulic ram mechanism, being rotatably mounted in a pedestal 7 on a wheeled base 8. The chain 11 is mounted so as to sag in its lower run, thereby ensuring that the empty scoops will have good contact with the material in the stockpile as they approach the lower end of the beam. Undue lateral displacement of the chain as the scoop engages the material in the stockpile is prevented by a guide shoe 18 pivoted on the beam at 19 and engaged by an arm 20 of a spring-controlled crank lever 21 pivotally mounted at 22, the lever carrying a jockey wheel 23 engaging the chain. Material from the hopper is loaded into the skip 50 of a concrete mixing machine, the outlet 32 of each hopper being controlled by a sliding door 33 running on rollers 34 engaging a track formed by angle members 36 secured to the hopper. These doors are operated by levers 47, 49 connected respectively to a shaft 42 and a tube 46 rotatable on the shaft, the shaft and tube having arms 39A, 39B which bear on levers 38 from which are suspended rods 37 secured at their lower ends to the doors. Material is guided into the appropriate hopper by a pivoted flap 51 controlled by a lever 54.
