Abstract

704,040. Glass electrodes. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS, Inc. Nov. 21, 1951], No. 27308/51. Class 37 [Also in Group XXIII] A glass electrode has a pH sensitive lithiasilica glass membrane of an oxide glass composition : Li about 50-120 atoms per 100 atoms Si, with or without Cs 0-20 atoms per 100 atoms Si the total Li and Cs not exceeding 120 atoms per 100 atoms Si, alkaline earth metals about 0-20 atoms per 100 atoms Si, and La and Ce together from a few to about 30 atoms per 100 atoms Si the atomic ratio of La and Ce in either order being a maximum of about 10 (see Group XXIII). An example comprises, in atoms per 100 atoms Si, Li 80, Ba 11.4, La 8.1, Ce 7.3. Some properties of this glass are given and compared with those of certain other glasses. Glasses according to the invention possess good chemical durability and may be put into use without preliminary treatment. Specification 627,442, [GroupÀ XXIII], is referred to.
