Abstract

703,214. Trimming welded joints. BAILIS, R. Feb. 18, 1952, No. 4287/52. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXIII] Apparatus for removing flash from both sides of the weld seam of two butt-welded metal sheets 18, 20 comprises upper and lower rotary grinders 10, 12 mounted in housings 22, 23 vertically adjustable, by screws 30, on a carriage 28. The carriage 28 has lateral tongues 32 received in grooves 34 in a base housing 36, and is moved relative to the housing by a screw 44 operated .by a handwheel 47. The rotary grinders are driven by motors M which may be electric but are preferably air motors, the supply of compressed air being controlled by a valve 76 operated automatically or by a foot pedal 78. The sheets 18, 20 are clamped between a stationary lower jaw 52 secured to the housing 36 and a movable upper jaw 54 carried by a lever 60 pivotally mounted at 68 on the housing 36 and actuated by a double-acting air cylinder 80 under the ,control of valve 83 operated by a handle 86. To ensure tight clamping the jaw 54 is secured to the lever 60 by pivot pin 62 so as to seat itself properly on the sheet; it is tightened on to the sheet by turning screw 66. The jaws 52, 54 are each in two pieces with the juxtaposed edges bevelled to accommodate the grinders. The valve handle 86 is operated by a rocker arm 89 pivoted at 90 and loaded by spring 92,; the other end 94 of the rocker arm has a set screw 96 to co-operate with the rear edge 98 of the carriage 28; when the carriage 28 is in its narrowest position the valve 83 is thus automatically actuated to raise the jaw 54, but as soon as the carriage 28 is moved forwardly from this position the spring 92 contacts the valve 83 to lower the jaw 54 to damping position. After grinding one seam, the sheets are moved, so as to bring the next seam into correct position to be ground, by auxiliary clamping jaws 100, 102 carried by a sliding carriage 104 having a pinion 110 meshing with a fixed rack 108 and operated through gears 110b, 112 by a handwheel 114; movement of the carriage 104 is limited by adjustable stops 116, 117. The lower jaw 102 is fixed to the carriage 104; the upper jaw 100 is pivoted at 119 to a lever 120 pivotally mounted at 122 on the carriage 104 and actuated by a double-acting air cylinder 128 under the control of a valve 134 operated by a foot pedal 136. The jaws are closed and the carriage is moved to the other end of its travel; the jaws are then opened and the carriage returned to its original position. The housing 36 is mounted on a chassis 38 provided with flanged wheels 40 riding on a rail 42 so that the apparatus can be moved into position adjacent any one of a number of welding machines.
