Abstract

703,021. Making wire fabric. RYLANDS BROS., Ltd., and FAULKNER, D. S. July 15, 1952 [July 19, 1951], No. 17119/51. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4) Apparatus for dividing a length of chain link or like fabric into two or more widths, comprises means for traversing the fabric step-bystep, and means for cutting the fabric and knuckling over the wire ends along the cut edges during halts in the movement of the fabric and means for synchronizing the operation of the cutting and knuckling means with the movement of the fabric. The apparatus may be combined with a machine for weaving chain link fabric, Fig. 1, and comprises a base plate 14, adjustably positioned laterally of the fabric, and carrying a cutting unit 15 and knuckling units 16, 17. The cutting unit comprises opposed reciprocating cutters 22, 24, Figs. 3 and 4, mounted on slides in a vertical slideway 18 and actuated through toggles 27 from a pneumatic piston 25. Each knuckling device, Fig. 5, comprises male and female tools 28, 29 carried on a vertically movable slide 30. Racks 39, 40 on a crosshead 37 engage with pinions 41, 42 engaging with rack teeth 43, 44 on the tools. A piston rod 36 abuts the cross head 37 and in operation raises the crosshead and slide so that the tools penetrate the mesh. Further movement of the slide 30 is halted by stops 45 on the guide rods 32, and the crosshead 37 continues to move against a spring 38; causing the knuckling tools to move together to effect a knuckling operation. The sequence of operations is timed by the actuation of valves 47-49, controlling the supply of pressure air to the actuating pistons, by a cam shaft 60 driven in synchronism with operation of the weaving machine. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown) the device is arranged to cut and knuckle chain link fabric drawn from a roll. The Provisional Specification states that the cutting and knuckling devices may be operated by a photo-electric cell and light beam.
