Abstract

702,991. Electromagnetic switches. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. June 20, 1951 [Sept. 14, 1950]. No. 22662/50. Class 38(5) [Also in Group XL(c)] An electric over-load device primarily for the protection of high voltage and high power valves against damage due to internal discharges, comprises at least one reactance made of or incorporating springy conductive material arranged to be distorted against its natural springiness by the current to move it away from a fixed contact to insert resistance into the protected circuit. In the figure, the device comprises an insulating rod 1 carrying metal bosses 2 with interposed light phosphor-bronze or other metal helical springs 3, which normally press lightly against the bosses. The springs and bosses are connected in series in the circuit to be protected by terminals 8 and brackets 6 supporting the rod 1 within a casing 4 containing a salt solution 5. In the event of an overload, the excess current flowing through the springs causes them to contract and break contact with the bosses 2, the gaps thus formed being bridged by the salt solution so inserting resistance into the protected circuit.
