Abstract

701,704. Electron beam apparatus. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 17, 1952 [March 17, 1951], No. 6456/51. Class 39(1) An electronic storage tube having a charge storage electrode is arranged so that to perform a writing operation the storage electrode is charged by means of secondary electrons and to perform a reading operation photo-electrons are employed. The storage tube 1 may comprise a mesh electrode 3 coated on one side with insulating elements 4 on which charges are stored, a mesh electrode 5, a photo-cathode 2 and an electron gun 6. The cathode 2 may be at zero potential, the storage electrode 3 at 0.5 volts. the mesh electrode 5 at 3 volts, the wall coating 7 at -10 volts and the gun 6 at -1500 volts. The signals to be stored, for example radar signals, are used to modulate the electron gun 6, the beam from which scans the cathode 2 and causes secondary emission which charges the insulating elements 4 negatively. In reading, a flying light spot on a cathode ray tube 9 is focused on the photo-cathode 2 and causes photo-emission, and the number of photo-electrons which pass through the mesh 3 to the signal electrode 5 is determined by the charges laid down in the elements 4. To remove the charge image on the mesh 3 the cathode 2 may be pulsed negatively during a frame fly-back period and flooded with light so that photo-electrons are released with sufficient energy to drive the elements 4 to a positive potential.
