Abstract
Polyacrylonitrile is made by polymerizing, batchwise or continuously, an aqueous dispersion of acrylonitrile in the presence of a water soluble redox catalyst system and employing carbon dioxide, preferably under pressure, to maintain and regulate an acid pH, e.g. between 4 and 4.5. The polymerization may be terminated at any stage by releasing the carbon dioxide pressure. The redox catalyst may be a mixture of potassium persulphate and sodium bisulphite. The polymer dispersion may be treated with steam under reduced pressure to remove carbon dioxide and unreacted monomer. The polymer may be dry spun into threads.
