Abstract
<PICT:0701215/III/1> <PICT:0701215/III/2> <PICT:0701215/III/3> <PICT:0701215/III/4> A tubular furnace for the treatment of pressurised fluid reactants, e.g. the catalytic or non-catalytic cracking of hydrocarbons, the production of "synthesis" gas from natural gases &c. comprises in combination a heating chamber, one or more elongated reaction tubes disposed in the heating chamber, an outer p metallic tube disposed about each reaction tube in fluid impervious relationship with the inner tube and the heating chamber, inlet and outlet means for delivering and removing the pressurised reactants, and means for preventing fluid flow through the outer tube during the treatment of the pressurised reactants. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises a furnace 10 in which are located parallel reaction tubes 16 surrounded by outer tubes 11 suspended from spring supporting means 12 connected to flanges 13 on the outer surfaces of the tubes. Fluid impervious joints are provided by sealing rings 14 and asbestos packing rings 5. The reaction tubes 16 are supported by welds 17 which join the tubes 11, 16 above the furnace arch 18. The ends of the reaction tubes are closed by plates 19, 20. Gases are supplied to the annular space formed between the tubes through inlets 39 and exhausted through a common offtake 23 having an adjustable pressure release valve 26 and a connection 27 to control mechanism 28. Reactants are supplied to the tubes 11 through line 29 provided with a valve 30 in communication with the control 28 and the reacted gases are taken off through lines 34 communicating through control valve 35 with headers 33. The ends of the tubes projecting beyond the furnace are enclosed in insulating jackets 36 and the tubes 16 are provided with expansion joints. In operation non-combustive gases are flowed through the annular space between the tubes and the control mechanism is arranged so that on rupture of a reaction tube the pressure is stepped up in the annular space thus preventing escape of reaction gases; alternatively the control may operate the valves 30, 35 to shut down the plant. In modifications, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) the outer tubes enclose only part of the inner tubes or may be extended to enclose the ends of the tubes. The cross sections shown in Figs. 6-8 show modifications in which (6) three reaction tubes 110 are enclosed in a common outer tube 111 (7) the inner reaction tube 120 is supported in the outer tube by ribs 122 (8) the reaction tube is divided into sections by cross members 133.
