Abstract

Aromatic hydrocarbons are produced by contacting a triene having at least 6 carbon atoms in a straight chain, in the vapour phase at elevated temperature with an aromatization catalyst. Catalysts and reaction conditions specified are those described in Specification 702,360. p-Xylene is prepared from 2,5-dimethylhexa-1,3,5-triene which can be obtained from 2,5-dimethylhex-3-yne-2,5-diol, produced by condensing acetone and acetylene, as follows: (a) partial hydrogenation of the yne-diol to the ene-diol and catalytic dehydration in vapour phase; (b) conversion of the ene-diol formed as in (a) to the dichlor derivative followed by dihydrochlorination; (c) conversion of the ene-diol to a di-ester, and thermal decomposition of this; (d) dehydration of the ene-diol to 2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-2,5-dihydrofuran with a dehydrating agent and catalytic vapour phase dehydration of the latter. Conditions are generally those described in the Specification above referred to for conversion of the corresponding ane-diol to a diene.
