Abstract

698,322. Vehicle suspensions; rubber springs. FREI, J. July 5, 1949 [July 13, 1948], No. 17771/49. Class 108 (iii). [Also in Group XXXI] In a telescopic spring device suitable for vehicle wheel suspensions, there is provided one or more elastic elements, such elements having the external shape of a corrugated rubber hose, its end being secured to the two telescopic members, whereby the sliding surfaces are protected. As shown in Fig. 1, the members 1 and 3 move telescopically with the aid of bearings 2. A rubber tube 5 is attached at its ends by bands 6 to the members 1 and 3 so that the rubber acts as a resilient member and also seals the telescopic members against foreign matter. Apertures 5a and constricting rings 5b may be provided to vary the resilience. A rubber buffer 7 cushions the member 3 in its limiting position. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a modification, Fig. 3 (Cancelled), in which the rubber tube is replaced by a series of separate rubber members 10, separated, if desired, by metal washers 11, and the different members may have different resiliencies, e.g. some may be hollow and some may be of a different rubber. In this arrangement, the end rubber members are vulcanized to metal plates 9 which are secured to the outer and inner telescopic members by bands 9a. In a further modification, Fig. 4 (Cancelled), the separate rubber members 10 have cavities of different sizes to vary their resilience and are connected together by plates 11a which can slide on the tube 3. The end-plates 9c and intermediate plates 11a are of metal or synthetic material and the rubber members may be pushed thereon, secured by adhesive or vulcanized. Fig. 6 (Cancelled), shows the invention applied to the resilient mounting of the rear-axle fork 14 in a motor cycle. The axle-carrying fork 14 is slidably mounted on a tube 13 fixed to the frame 12. Movements of the fork are cushioned by the rubber blocks 8 and 10 which may have cavities 5a which may be annular or otherwise. The rubber blocks may have metal end-plates vulcanized thereto. The tube 13 may be arcuate instead of straight. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
