Abstract
In a method of producing aroxyaliphatic carboxylic acids of the general formula Rn1Xn2C6H5-(n1+n2)OR1COOH, wherein R is an alkyl or aryl group or hydrogen, R1 is an alkylene residue, X is chlorine or hydrogen and n1 and n2 are integers, the sum of which is not more than 4, a phenolic compound of the general formula Rn1Xn2C6H5-(n1+n2)OH is reacted with a chloraliphiphatic carboxylic acid of the general formula ClR1COOH in an alkaline solution at a pH value which is maintained (preferably constant) within the range of 10.0 to 12.0 throughout the reaction by the addition of caustic soda solution and/or sodium carbonate solution throughout the course of the reaction, the initial concentration of the phenolic compound being at least 0.5 mols. per litre of reaction solution and the reaction being carried out at a temperature of at least 75 DEG C. Preferably the pH is kept constant during the reaction. In examples (1) 2 : 4-dichloro-phenoxy-acetic acid is prepared by adding monochloracetic acid to a solution of 2 : 4-dichloro-phenol and caustic soda at 98 DEG C., whilst keeping the pH constant at 10.5; (2) 4-chloro-2-methyl-phenoxyacetic acid is prepared similarly by reacting 4-chloro-2-methyl phenol and mono-chloro-acetic acid keeping the pH at a value of 10.
