Pipe 19, advancing upon a pallet from the left along roller conveyer 18, is gripped by pipe clamps 20 and is rotated about shaft 51 till it assumes the inverted position shown, when it continues to the right upon pallet 40. Pipe clamps 20 are carried by turret assembly 17 (see later) which slides up column 16, its position thereon being adjusted by handle 27 working metering screw 26 engaging a thread in said turret assembly. The rotation of the turret assembly 17 is effected by driven shaft 24 (see later), the drive from motor 22 passing through shaft 138 and clutch 23 to said shaft 24. Clutch 23 comprises part 137 fixed to shaft 138, part 139 being fixed to bracket 136, and part 140 slidably keyed to shaft 24 and operated from air cylinder 141 by a linkage pivoting at 143 so that said part 140 either clutches shaft 24 to shaft 138 to drive the former or "clutches" shaft 24 to bracket 136 so as to brake said shaft 24. The pipe clamps 20 are arranged in pairs on the ends of and this separates arms 83 of a pipe clamp 'which is secured by block 54 and screws 57 to shaft 51 which latter is rotated from driven shaft 24 through worm 49 and worm wheel 50, the whole of this turret assembly 17 being clamped to column 16 through clamping ring 44 secured by screws 47. Rotation of said shaft 51 rotates cam 39 to actuate control switch 38. Each pipe clamp . 20 is pneumatically operated from a cylinder 25, expansion of said cylinder causing the pivoting of arms 83 so that arms 72 carrying pivoted jaws 68 grip the pipe against pivoted pads 80. Fig. 6. The four cylinders 25 are operated by compressed air introduced through conduit 98 in shaft 51, the air passing through passageways 96 and 95. A ball 110 sits on the valve seating 111 in the respective passageway 96 and is displaced by rotation of the turret assembly to the other valve seating so that only the receiving pair of pipe clamps is operated to grip a pipe.
