Abstract

696,983. Drying cereals. DELAROUZEE, G. A., and CHEVAUCHEZ, J.-L. June 19, 1951 [July 31, 1950], No. 14505/51. Class 34 (ii) [Also in Group I] A conditioning, drying and sterilizing process for cereals consists first in admixing the cereals to be treated with a pulverulent substance, e.g., sand, granular metal, glass powder which is inert to. wards the cereals and having a lower specific heat than the cereals, in a quantity sufficient for filling up all interstices between the cereal grains, this substance being previously raised to a suitable temperature, e.g., 75-120‹C. so as to serve as a heat vehicle by abandoning its heat to the said cereals while sterilizing the cereal surface layer and partially vaporizing the water contained in the cereal grains, then in causing a stream of cold air preferably under depression and in counter-current to flow through the mass of the mixture thus obtained so as to cool the pulverulent substance faster than the cereals and to condense the vapour upon the substance and so to drive away the water, and in mechanically separating the substance and the treated cereals. As shown the cereal to be treated and the pulverulent substance from hoppers 2, 3 respectively, after being mixed in the required proportions by means not shown are fed to an airtight and lagged column 1 down which the mixture falls on to a sieve 9 which separates the grain which is removed at 10 the pulverulent substance being removed at 11 and passed through an oven 12 to heat it before returning to the hopper 3. Air is drawn counter-currently through the column by means not shown, e.g., a fan. Adjusting means are provided at the lower end of the column for regulating the speed of fall of the mixture and consequently the duration of the desiccation.
