Abstract

696,780. Weighing-apparatus. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. March 7, 1952 [March 14, 1951]. No. 6145/51. Class 143. In weighing-apparatus, particularly for weighing ingots on the tables approaching a rolling mill, a platform is raised by power-operated means from an inoperative - position to an operative position through a position in which.it lifts from a support the object to be weighed, the platform being connected to force-measuring mechanism. In one embodiment, the ingot, I, Fig. 1A. before weighing is supported on the rollers 31, and is lifted therefrom by the platform which comprises bars 32 carried on a grid the three elements of which project upwards in the spaces between four of the rollers 31. The platform is supported by pins 25 pivoted in brackets 24 attached to the middle of the two side members of the weighbeam 1. The platform also comprises depending, side members 26 the lower ends of which are pivoted to links 44 attached to pivots F in adjustable brackets 45. The two side members of the weighbeam 1 are pivoted at one end to adjustable pendant links 18 carried by universal joints 20 at opposite ends of a transverse rocker 21 pivoted at its centre to brackets 22 mounted on the table 23 of a weighing machine W. At the other end the weighbeam 1 is pivoted on pins 2, Fig. 1B, carried on lever arms 3. fixed to a horizontal shaft journaled in bearings 5. - The arms 3 are extended by arms 10 carrying counterpoise weights 9. Two further lever arms 17 extending from the same shaft are connected through adjustable links 14 to cranks 12 driven by a motor 11 through worm and spur reduction gearing. In the inoperative position, the arms 17 and weights 9 are in the broken line positions, the platform being lowered below the rollers 31, by movement of the cranks 12. In the weighing position shown, the end of the weighbeam 1 is raised by rotation of the cranks 12 to their dead-centre position, the pivots 2 now being fixed, the load being supported by the platform and transmitted to the links 18 for measurement by the machine W. In another embodiment, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), the weighbeam is moved, to raise the load, by a pressure-operated piston and the load is measured by operating a pressure meter through the centre knife-edge bearing of the weighbeam. The pressure meter may be a member incorporating one or more electrical strain gauge elements the resistance of which alters according to the load. The platform is constrained to move on a vertical axis by a parallelogram linkage.
