Abstract

696,355. Baling-presses. SANDERSON & MURRAY; Ltd., and DAVIDSON, M. W. April 29, 1952. No. 10734/52. Class 94(i) A baling press comprises an inflatable bellows contained in a well and acting on a ram movable within the well to press material from the well into a receptacle inverted over the well. A base plate 5, Fig. 1, is supported by vertical tie rods 4 from a floor plate 1 having a square opening 3 communicating with a well 6 which is constructed of plywood lined with sheet metal and-contains a wooden ram 8 secured to the upper end of a bellows 7 fitted with an air inlet pipe 29 and exhaust and safety valves (not shown). The bellows consists of a series of rubber bags 27, fig. 3. with central apertures secured together by clamping rings, the peripheries of adjacent bags being interconnected by canvas ties 32 encircled by ropes 34 to limit the expansion of the bags. The upper bag is secured centrally and at its periphery to the ram 8 and the lower bag is anchored to the base plate by ties 33. After the well has been filled with material to be baled, a trolley 10 comprising a frame 11, Fig. 5, fitted with wheels 12 is moved into position above the well where it is located by the engagement of bars 9 on the plate 1 over flanges 13 on the frame 11. A bag for the reception of the compressed material is passed over corner bars 15 secured by quick-release clamp to the frame 11 and its lower end engaged by hooks 18, Fig. 7, on plates 17 which are locked in position on the trolley by bolts 19. A head frame 21, Fig. 1, supported by wire ropes 22 passing over pulleys and connected to counterweights (not shown) is then lowered until a flange 23 thereon encircles the upper ends of the bars 15 and is attached by chains 25 to the upper ends of the tie bars 4. Compressed air is then supplied to the bellows to cause the ram to force the material into the bag in which it is retained by skewers passed through holes 20 in the plates 17 and slots 35 in the upper surface of the ram. After removal of the trolley from the press, the bolts 19 and clamps are released, the bale is removed and the bars 15 withdrawn therefrom and replaced on the trolley frame. The skewers are withdrawn after closure of the open end of the bag.
