A document sorting or filing apparatus comprises a plurality of partitions 4 mounted in a casing 1, and a plurality of selectively tiltable elements 8 positioned transversely of the partitions 4 in fixed spaced relationship to each other so as to form with the partitions a plurality of receptacles 26, the tiltable elements 8 extending the full width of the casing and each being common to all the partitions 4. Each partition 4 comprises a lower member 5 with spaced openings 6 in the bottom edge and an upper U-shaped locking member 7, the lower member 5 being inserted through aligned openings 9 in the elements 8 and lowered so that the openings 6 each engage a member 8 and then the upper member 7 is inserted and secured to the members 5 by rivets or screws 10. This assembly of partitions 4 and elements 8 is then placed over an assembly of rods 12 in the bottom of the casing which enter openings 14 on the edges of the elements 8. The rods 12 are fastened to cross rods 13'which have their ends bent up and looped round a vertical post 16 between lock-nuts 17 by which the assembly can be raised or lowered forming a movable floor, usable to alter the depth of the receptacles for different size documents. The partitions 4 are secured by a rod 19 passed through apertures 18 at one end of the members 7 and fastened to the side walls 3, 3<SP>1</SP> of the casing 1. Secondary sorting elements 20, 21 are used to subdivide the receptacles and have appropriate openings to pass over the partitions 4 and the rods 12. Finger members 8<SP>1</SP> and 20<SP>1</SP> for tilting the elements 8, 20 are provided with digits to form an index, the elements 20, 21 being in pairs with the finger members 20<SP>1</SP> offset, as shown. Each pair of elements 20, 21 is marked 0-4 and 5-9 respectively over the receptacles 26 and are provided with projections 28, such as wire staples, adjacent their upper margins to stop upward movement of light weight documents. Projections at a position corresponding to the partitions may be provided on any of the sorting elements to increase the distance between them.
