The setting of the pin-carriage of a ten-key adding-machine is performed by power in order to relieve the keys of load, key depression connecting a corresponding pin raising lever to a power-operated bail. In a preferred form, the bail 30 is operated by a solenoid 35 whose circuit is closed by key depression, and the solenoid also releases the carriage 61 for stepwise movement. A set of levers 23 for raising the pins 60 of the carriage 61 carry individual coupling pawls 20, depression of a key 10, through a bell-crank 14, rocking the corresponding pawl 20 into engagement with the bail 30. The depressed key 10 also rocks a bail 40, a link 43 closing a contact 46 to energize the solenoid 35 which thereupon lowers the the bail 30 to rock the corresponding lever 23 and raise the appropriate pin 60 of the carriage 61. The operated lever 23 also rocks a bail 100 to actuate the carriage step-release mechanism, this comprising (Fig. 6), a pair of pawls 108, 112 alternately disengaged from a rack 116 on the carriage by fingers 111, 114 on a lever arm 105 rocked with the bail. Adjustable stops 104 limit movement of the pawl actuating arm 105. As the bail 30 completes its downward movement, a pin 55 thereon depresses the link 43 to release the contact 46 to break the circuit of the solenoid, and the contact cannot be reclosed for a further operation without complete return of the key 10 and re-engagement of a step 47 in the link 43 behind the contact blade 46. Differential and item-indicating mechanisms. As pins 60 of successive orders are set, pawls 86 on the carriage are successively tripped by contact with a stationary abutment 91 and release racks 88 to springs 89 for movement to differentially-adjusted positions determined by engagement of lugs 93 on the racks with the set pins 60. Studs 120 at the extremities of the racks 88 control subsequent adjustment of control slides 122. Item-indicating drums 94 mounted on the carriage gear with the racks 88 and come into view as the carriage moves step-wise during the setting.
