Abstract

694,457. Oil gas generation. CHAN, S. N. Aug. 3. 1951 [Jan. 8, 1951], No. 568/51. Class 55(ii) [Also in Group XXVII] Oil cracking apparatus, adapted particularly for supplying an air-oil gas mixture to an internal combustion engine after it has been started up on petrol, comprises an oil heating chamber, a cracking chamber supplied through an atomizer with heated oil, a mixing chamber supplied with controlled amounts of air and oil gas, a heating chamber for the mixture and means for conducting engine exhaust gases against or through the heating, cracking and mixing chambers to heat them to 600-900‹C. As shown the apparatus A is bolted to the engine exhaust manifold E and is supplied with crude or diesel oil &c. from a tank T, the oil first being pumped through the engine cooling passages ordinarily traversed by water and surplus returning to the tank through a by-pass 57. The apparatus comprises an upper conduit traversed by a mixing tube 29 and mixture heating coil 37 which leads to the intake manifold I, and a lower chamber 3 traversed by tubes 22 conveying the engine gases to an exhaust pipe connection 26. In each of the hollow side walls of the upper conduit a plate bored to provide a succession of longitudinal ducts constitutes a heating passage for the oil which enters at the bottom of one wall crosses to the other wall through a duct 17 and passes at the bottom of the other wall through an atomizer 19 into the lower chamber. A pipe 41 leads oil gas generated therein to a gas and air inlet control 30 comprising a block with two cylindrical passages 39, 40, in which eccentrically formed plugs are housed and by rotation vary the free cross section of the passages. This adjustment is effected by meshing pinions under the control of a lever connected to the throttle. The gas/air ratio suitable for the engine is initially fixed by relative adjustment of the pinions by trial and error. Within the mixing chamber a cylindrical block 34 is fitted with peripheral helical grooves 35 and a freely mounted propeller for causing intimate mixing of the gas and air. Further cracking is effected in the coiled pipe 37. The change over from petrol to oil may be effected manually or automatically as by thermostatic means. Additional air may be supplied through the petrol carburetter C. The engine may be water-cooled, oil from tank T being supplied direct to the generator A.
