Abstract

694,338. Piling. CEMENTATION, CO., Ltd. April 25, 1952 [Jan. 26, 1951], No. 2064/51. Class 68(ii) A method of forming an underground structure comprises building a plurality of contiguous arcuate section piers e.g. four, namely 1A...4A and a contiguous end circular section pier 5A all extending down to a first level e.g. 50 feet and together forming a continuous wall. 'The ground enclosed between the piers is now excavated to o form shafts extending down to the first level, and a plurality of further piers e.g. 1B...5B are now built extending from the bottom of the shafts to a second level e.g. 100 feet each of the further piers being of a related shape to those of the first level but of smaller radius and embracing one another to form a second continuous wall similar to the first, but at a lower level. Buttresses 16 are 'built continuing the curve of the arcuate piers 1A...4A, portions X and Y of these piers are removed and the arcuate sections of the inner piers are extended in the spaces thus made until they embrace the next inner pier as shown by the transition from 2B to 3B. The wall may be similarly continued downwardly to a third or lower level. Specification 694,337 is referred to.
