Abstract
Synthetic polypeptides are prepared by esterifying the g -carboxylic group of glutamic or a like amino acid, converting to the carbonic anhydride, any free reactive group being blocked before such anhydride formation, allowing to polymerize in pyridine solution, and removing any blocking groups that have been introduced, e.g. by hydrolysis. The polypeptide may be polyglutamic acid, a copolymer of glutamic acid and another a -amino acid, or a corresponding compound in which aspartic acid is used. An optically active compound or racemic mixture may be used. The polymer may be dissolved in pyridine and precipitated with ether to free the polymer from polymers of lower molecular weight. Copolymers may be prepared from 3 parts of g -methyl-glutamic anhydride and 1 or 2 parts of leucine anhydride, 1 or 2 parts of phenylalanine anhydride, or 1 part of o-acetyltyrosine or cystine anhydride.
