Abstract
693,868. Heating and cooling pulverulent materials. ALUMINIUM LABORATORIES, Ltd. June 26, 1951 [July 20, 1950], No. 15151/51. Class 64 (ii) [Also in Group XXX] Heat exchange between pulverulent materials and a fluid is effected by maintaining the powders in fluidized state and in flow while contacting heat-exchange elements 25 through which the fluid is circulated. Moreover, a long bed of powder (such as hot, calcined alumina to be cooled by water flowing in the elements 25) is formed around the elements, to be fluidized by upflowing gas and, since the material is fed continuously to the bottom at one end of the bed and withdrawn from the top at the other end where the fluidizing gas is led away, there is a flow of the powder lengthwise of the horizontal bed. Heating or cooling fluid flows in sinuous tube coils 25 suspended in a long, narrow trough A having an air chamber 12 beneath a grating 10a supporting a porous diaphragm 10 through which air from a control valve (not shown) is supplied for fluidizing the powder bed. From a conduit 17 the powder is fed by gravity into a feed bin 16 and flows beneath a gate 18 which is raised or lowered to adjust the flow rate of powder through the trough A. At the other end of the trough the powder flows over an adjustable gate 27, which determines the height of the fluidized bed, into a hopper 28, while the fluidizing gas is carried away through a stack 32.
