Abstract

693,501. Piston packing. MAHLE, E. July 20, 1950 [Nov. 16, 1949; Jan. 28, 1950], No. 18163/50. Class 122(i) A bi-metallic piston ring comprises a one-piece light metal body I at least partly enclosing a hard metallic resilient member 2, said light metal body constituting the major bulk of said ring and having light metal surfaces, or thin wear-resisting coatings 3 thereon, through which said light metal body is adapted to serve as the principal heat conducting medium between the piston and cylinder wall. In Fig. 1 the member 2 comprises a spring steel, cast-in insert lying in a plane parallel to the side faces of the body 1 and the coating 3 is of chromium. In a modification the ring is cut from a length of light metal tubing having a helical wire embedded therein, the ring gap being made between the ends of the wire where it penetrates the side surfaces. In Fig. 4 the member 2 comprises a ring of rectangular cross-section the outer periphery of which is flush with that of the body 1, and is provided with holes 7 into which the light metal flows. In a modification apertured segments are cast-in around the outer periphery of the body 1. In a further embodiment the body 1 is formed with an internal groove into which is sprung a ring one end of which is bent radially outwards to engage in the ring gap and the other end is bent radially inwards to engage a recess in the piston ring groove. The inserted members 2 may be formed as bodies of uniform bending resistance.
