A clamping machine for assembling boxes of the kind in which the sides and ends are dovetailed together comprises a vertically adjustable table, a pair of abutments mounted on the table and at least one vertically movable horizontal squeezing bar located above the table. As shown a base board 1 has attached thereto a vertical frame 2 which carries an adjustable table 7 provided with a pair of adjustable, angular abutments 8. A platen 3 slidable on the uprights of the frame 2 and supporting horizontal squeezing bars 4 movable on the platen, is connected to the piston rod 6 of a power cylinder 5. In operation one side of the box is laid on the table 7 and held in position by the abutments 8. An end of the box is placed on edge against each abutment and held by leaf springs 9, the remaining side of the box being laid across the two ends. The platen is lowered to bring the squeezing bars 4 into contact with the uppermost side of the box and the squeezing action continued to force the sides and ends into engagement. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the platen carries a nailing device comprising hammer boxes which are brought into operation when squeezing has taken place. The machine may be provided with a nailing device movable independently of the platen. The Provisional Specification describes abutments having top portions which telescope into the main portion.
