Abstract
693,161. Pick-up mountings. BRUSH DEVELOPMENT CO., and LYNCH, T. E. Feb. 17, 1948 [March 21, 1947], No. 7787/47. Class 40 (ii) [Also in Groups XXXIX and XL(b)] In an electro-mechanical transducer employing a flexing type multiplate crystal element 13, Fig. 1, the' end of the crystal remote from the front drive end is free from rigid engagement with the housing which is fitted with a resilently yielding material 18 to provide a mounting exerting predomiriantly a stiffness force against the flexing of the element at lower frequencies. The stylus holder 15 passes through a rubber grommet 14 in the' case 10 and is connected to the crystal by a yoke 9. In a more practical embodiment, Figs. 2 and 3, the crystal 29 is restrained against cold flow in the filler material by a harness comprising legs 40, 41, and a cross bar 46 in which it is free to pivot. The pivots 33, 34 engage in detents 72, 73 on the base plate and harness respectively. The stylus holder 90 is pushed into a quill 35 attached to the crystal element and is supported in a notch 94 of a stylus guard 60 which is formed on an extension of the harness base. Bearings 82, 83 on the guard prevent damage to the pick up by heavy handling. Suitable resiliently yielding fillers include plasticized polyvinyl resins and rubber-like plastic elastomers, particular reference being made to an elastomer made by copolymerizing vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate and dispersing the resultant resin in a plasticizer such as dibutyl or dioctyl phthalate. The crystal assembly is inserted in a canister 85 (Fig. 5) which is filled with the filler in its liquid state until the upper disc 50 of the base engages a shoulder 86 of the canister. Extensions 55, 56 of the legs 40 provide the electrical connection. The crystal used may be of Rochelle salt or primary ammonium phosphate but the former may be precluded if it cannot withstand the temperature required for polymerization of the elastomer. Prior to assembly the crystal is dipped in divinyl acetylene neoprene to protect it from attack by the mounting material 18. Specification 562,803 is referred to.
