Abstract

693,096. Batteries. INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH, Inc. Jan. 11, 1952 [Aug. 8, 1951], No. 889/52. Class 53. A catalytic device for causing the combination of hydrogen and oxygen evolved from an accumulator and returning the water so formed to the electrolyte comprises a nickel-plated gauze receptacle 31 enclosing pellets 35 of palladium or platinum which are embedded in asbestos or other porous material 34 which has been treated with a silicone resin or other substance to render it waterproof without impairing its gas permeability. The treatment may be carried out by first washing the asbestos with water and acetone, drying, and immersing it in a solution of silicone resin in carbon tetrachloride and drying it. The container 31 is attached by adhesive 36 to the cap 24 of the device and is supported on a nickel wire frame 28 resting on the base 18 which is attached to the cap 24 by adhesive 27. An outlet 22 is provided for the escape of any electrolyte that may enter the device.
