Outside callipers comprise two feelers 2, 3 connected to a common elastic member 4 in turn fastened to a body 1 in such a way that the feelers are movable mutually relative to each other and also relative to the body and are adjustable in a direction from each other by an object to be gauged. Connections of the body 1 and feelers 2, 3 to a leaf-spring 4 are made by pressure-plates 23, 25, 26 and screws 24, 27, 28, thus forming a pivot bearing and the other ends of the feelers have contact edges 13, 14 formed by hard metal for embracing an object to be gauged. The feelers are urged toward each other by springs 11, 12 retained in threaded bores 7, 8 in the body 1 by screws 9, 10 and are set at a desired distance from each other by a screw 15 mounted in one feeler bearing against the other feeler. Another screw 17 with knob 16 is mounted in the feeler 3 and bears on a feeler 18 of a gauge (not shown) mounted in the feeler 2 and thus serves for adjusting the zero. The gauge may be of pneumatic type comprising two pressure chambers connected to a common source of pressure medium and each provided with a restricted inlet and outlet controllable in accordance with the dimension to be gauged and so connected to an indicator that the pressure difference causes the dimension to be indicated, the necessary connections being made through lines 20, 21, 22. The gauge described is manually operable, however the device may be mounted on automatic machine-tools, e.g. a lathe, and may be intermittently advanced into engagement with the work-piece.
