Abstract

Copolymers of vinylidene chloride and vinyl chloride are prepared by copolymerizing, in aqueous emulsion and in a closed vessel, a mixture of from 35 to 70 per cent of vinylidene chloride and from 65 to 30 per cent by weight of vinyl chloride, until from 10 to 60 per cent of the weight of mixed monomers has polymerized, as evidenced by a pressure increase at the substantially constant reaction temperature, of 2 to 12 pounds per sq. inch, then adding monomeric vinylidene chloride to bring the total ratio of polymerizing materials to a higher value in the range of from 65 to 95 per cent by weight of vinylidene chloride and 35 to 5 per cent by weight of vinyl chloride, continuing the polymerization until from 80 to 90 per cent by weight of the total monomeric charge is copolymerized, and then recovering the copolymeric product. In examples polymerization is effected in the presence of dihexyl sodium sulphosuccinate, hydrogen peroxide and ferric nitrate at a pH of 2, and the latex coagulated in sodium chloride solution. Other monomers such as acrylonitrile, acrylates, methacrylates, styrene and vinyl acetate may be present in minor amounts. The polymers prepared by the process of the invention are particularly suitable for the production of films or filaments. Specifications 656,735 and 676,500 are referred to.
