Abstract
692,317. Woodworking fences. KEARNEY & TRECKER CORPORATION. Jan. 19, 1951 [Jan. 21, 1950], No. 1481/51. Classes 145 (i) and 145 (ii). A work fence or gauge for a woodworking machine such as a circular or band saw, or a shaping machine; is so constructed as to be movable towards, or away from, the tool and to be self aligning normal to the axis of the cutting tool. As shown, fence 19 is arranged normal to the carriage 20 and parallel to a circular saw 16. Carriage 20 is slidable on a guide bar 23 and has horizontal and vertical surfaces 28, 30 which bear thereon. Contact shoes 36, 37 are resiliently urged towards the carriage, and engage the rear surface 38 of the guide bar. These contact shoes hold the carriage and fence in correct alignment whilst allowing it to be moved to vary the fence-saw distance. Knobs 39-40 are provided to allow the shoes to be released, in order that the carriage and fence may be removed from the guide bar. To minimise friction when the fence is being adjusted, a narrow bearing surface 44 is provided on the fence to ride on the table 15. To lock the carriage and fence the fence and its support member 47 are displaced leftwardly (in the Figures) so that locking element 45 engages the edge 27 of the table, the action being produced by the clamp lever 63 pivotably carried by the housing 64. The surface 30 of carriage 20 is forced rightwardly by the clamp lever and engages the guide bar so that the fence and carriage are clamped. In the unclamped position of the lever, a compression spring moves support 47 and carriage 20 in the opposite directions to unclamp the assembly. The clamping is effected by a cam 69. Fig. 3 shows the assembly clamped and in Fig. 1 it is released. To control the fine transverse displacement of the carriage, the bracket 76 is clamped by screw 88 to the guide bar and the adjustment effected by the adjusting screw 74. The screw is received by a slot in the bracket and may be disconnected when the carriage is to be removed from the machine. If desired the bracket can be mounted on the other side of the carriage and then the screw 74 is threaded into a duplicate lug 89. A clearance 93 on fence 19 lessens the danger of kickback. In a modification (not shown) an extra guide bar is provided at the rear of the table and the clamping means force the carriage and fence apart to clamp between the guide bars. Alternatively the table has a dependent flange at the rear and a hooked portion of the fence engages inside the flange, which then replaces the extra guide bar.
