Abstract

691,870. Glass composition. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and PARTRIDGE, J. H. Sept. 19, 1951 [Sept. 19, 1950], No. 23005/50. Class 56. A glass suitable for sealing directly to iron or other metal of like thermal expansion characteristic has the following weight percentage composition, SiO, 45-50, one or more of CaO, SrO, BaO 25-37 the CaO being not more than 10, one or more of Na 2 O, Li 2 O, K 2 O 18-20, PbO plus ZnO 0-5 the ZnO if present being less than 5, F 0-2, and Al 2 O 3 0-2. Preferably the maximum percentages of the alkaline earth oxides are CaO 8, SrO 25, BaO 30, and if the total alkaline earth content is 30-37 per cent and the SrO or BaO exceeds 20 per cent then the other of these oxides is less than 5, whereas if the SrO and BaO are substantially equal then the total alkaline earth content does not exceed 28 per cent. PbO, ZnO, and F are preferably absent, but F, preferably in the form of cryolite or fluorspar, may be added to produce a very fluid glass for casting. Preferably Na 2 O is used as the alkali oxide, but a little Li 2 O may be present. Al 2 O 3 is not deliberately included, but 0.5-2 per cent may be derived from the container. The glasses have high electrical resistance, and may be used to form glass / metal seals in forming the envelopes of electrical devices. The composition and properties of several examples are given, and a comparison made with a typical soft glass.
